02/2019 1. Editorial – Looking. Again. – Benjamin Tallis

A discipline worried about its relevance, somewhat overshadowed by a bigger neighbour, split (with notable exceptions) into North American and European factions that stubbornly face in different directions even when looking at the ‘same’ things, yet still determinedly stating its case as a discipline. Familiar as this may sound, I’m not referring to International Relations but to Art History, with specific (and anecdotal) reference in this case to Renaissance scholars. A recent extended trip through Flanders in the company of a group of such scholars was not only a deeply beauti- ful and fascinating experience, but also provided an intriguing window into their discipline – and a mirror in which to reflect on our own.
